Join the Fun-Motion Team! (Help Wanted)
Up until now, Fun-Motion has been a solo effort. I do all HTML/PHP work, writing, video capture/editing, forum moderation, etc. As is apparent lately, though, I’ve been busy. I could use some help to keep the page chugging along with new reviews, articles, and on-topic forum discussion. So, I’m taking applications for the following positions:
Writer -Reviews
If you have a passion for physics games, with a knack for writing, get in touch with me! I’m looking for someone to write reviews for games not yet covered on Fun-Motion. If, for some reason, you aren’t familiar with the format here, check out my list of physics games for all 60+ reviews.
Job Requirements:
- Write reviews for new or undiscovered physics games
- Able to articulate game “feel” into written form.
- Concise, clear writing style.
- Good grammar and sentence flow.
Bonus Points
- Video capture/editing capability.
- HTML knowledge
To apply, email me some basic information about yourself and a review writing sample (feel free to use a game I’ve already reviewed). This is a paid position.
Writer – Features
In addition to the reviews, there are other writing tasks to be had: editorials, developer interviews, articles, and so on. If you’d like to write for Fun-Motion, but don’t have the time to do full reviews, we could still use you!
Job Requirements:
- Compose interview questions for game developers.
- Write articles covering history, trends, or whatever.
- Report on physics-related game industry news
To apply, drop me a line and include some basic information about yourself, what you’d like to do, and a writing sample.
Moderator – Forums
The Fun-Motion forums are a relatively recent addition to the site. An influx of users and the creep of off-topic, spam, and generally pointless activity necessitates forum moderators. I’m looking for a small group of mature, reliable moderators to keep things in line. This is an unpaid position.
Job Requirements
- Keep the forum clear of bona fide spam (automated posts)
- Keep the forum on topic and civil.
- A thick skin and the ability to separate your ego from the job.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to lead by example with polite maturity.
If you’re interested in becoming a forum moderator, email me with answers to the following.
- Some basic information about yourself.
- Why do you want to be a moderator?
- A user constantly posts crappy, substance-less posts. What do you do?
- Most of the forum hates a user, but you think they’re overreacting. How do you calm the masses?
- You and another moderator strongly disagree about something they did. How do you resolve this?
About Fun-Motion
Fun-Motion is the leading resource for physics games. With over 60 reviews, its catalog represents the single largest index for the genre. Matthew has spoken on physics games at such venues as IGDA Phoenix meetings and the Game Developer’s Conference.
Good luck!

Just for clarification, how would you be paid? I’m guessing per review. Am I correct?
Also, how would the pay be conducted? Paypal?
And how much per review?
on May 22nd, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Also, what basic information?
on May 22nd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Basic information: Anything required and pertinent. It’s kind of an open question.
Payments would be PayPal and per-review. It wouldn’t be a huge amount of cash, mind you, but for an hourly rate it wouldn’t be bad…

A question about the job as a writer, would we be able to submit articles whenever we want or is there a specific quota that we would have to meet every month? I’m in school and therefore don’t have a whole lot of time to frequently write articles.
Also, I’m guessing that we would have to find the physics games ourselves rather than you telling us the name of the game and we review it, is this correct?
I’ve followed Fun-Motion and physics games for a while and I guess I’m fairly good at writing.
I guess I’ll give my “resume” soon.
on May 22nd, 2007 at 6:28 pm
I sent you my “resume” for a moderating position, I hope you can take a look at it when a time is convenient.
on May 22nd, 2007 at 6:49 pm
I sent a resume as well, and I am sorry for the technical errors, Matthew. Please do not consider me incompetent.
on May 22nd, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Resume as in application. Sorry, I wasn’t thinking.
on May 22nd, 2007 at 7:08 pm
I sent an application for a reveiwer.

@Kokits:
There wouldn’t be a quota, although it would be nice if new writers could contribute regularly. There’s a certain amount of overhead with adding new staff; ideally that time investment would be offset by a number of reviews. I’m certainly flexible, though.
on May 22nd, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Wow! There’s been a great response so far with the number of applications. It’s going to be a bit of work to read through them and select the best. Keep them coming!
I’ll close submissions this weekend and make the announcement. I’ll be out of town next week on business, so I’ll try to get the new mods and reviewers set up before then.
on May 22nd, 2007 at 9:59 pm
I sent a moderator thing, but I could do reviews as well. I could do them without being paid, too (because I don’t like having the weight of a paying job on my shoulders).
But whatever, we’ll see I guess. :P

on May 23rd, 2007 at 3:20 pm
I was wondering how old you have to be to apply to any of the jobs.
on May 23rd, 2007 at 3:48 pm
Age isn’t an issue, as long as you have the skills.
on May 23rd, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Hi. I applied for a reviewer spot, and it would be cool if I got it, because I need every bit of money i can get and already have 2 games for review. I’m trying to fund my trip to the British Isles for next year, and every bit counts.
Good luck to everybody!

Applied for a Mod position. Just how many mods are a small group? I’m guessing 5. It appears a lot of people are interested, hopefully this’ll put FM on the map.
on May 23rd, 2007 at 9:41 pm
I, like many others, also applied to be a moderator, and just wanted to say good luck to all those trying for the positions.

I sent an application but I really do not have any major urge to write a review but I do have an interest in helping a reviewer have video of what he needs.
I have all the programs I need;
-Video Downloader (a FireFox plugin so I can download and keep YouTube.com or Google.com video)
– Sony Vegas (great for rendering and editing)
– Total Video Converter (converts all types of video including flash (YouTube, Google) to any other video file-type.
– Registered version of FRAPS.
– Registered version of Camtasia.
This year I do plan on buying a very powerful PC. With a Geforce 8800 GTX and Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme making capturing work alot better.

I sent you an application for reviewer position. I have experience with reviews. Other details in the email =P.
Good luck everyone.
P.S: If I get the job, its finally a reason for me to use the computer a lot! Ha ha.
on May 27th, 2007 at 3:21 am
Hello. Just like AquaGeneral, I might be able to help capturing footage from the games. I have some editing programs, and i went to a course in video-editiding at school. Don’t worry about paying me, it’s not necessary, (it would just be an honor to help you) ;)
on May 27th, 2007 at 7:59 am
I would most certainly apply but i dont think i will be able to utilise myself properly since i dont have that much time even though i think im good at writing things up.
on May 28th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Yeah I agree with Dj, I do not want any pay.
