Valve Releases Portal Teaser Trailer

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006 by Matthew in News

Valve has released the video trailer for their recently-announced physics-based puzzle game, Portal. The game appears to be a new version of Narbacular Drop, a student project featured in the IGF Student Showcase last year. As mentioned in an interview with Gamastura:

GS: Do you (yet) have any success stories or positive experience based on showing the student game to people in the game industry (praise, actually getting a job in the biz, etc)?

Every year, DigiPen puts on an expo for the senior class to allow developers to take a look at our final projects. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to speak with representatives of Valve and they were excited about what we were doing. Because of Narbacular Drop, our team is now collaborating with Valve.

Great game it looks to have the same sort of success as the gravity gun in half-life 2.

XZS: Portal will be bundled with Half-Life 2: Episode Two (not sure if Valve has an official webpage for it or not, I didn’t see one at first glance). It’ll be released in the fall for PC as episodic content, and included with the Xbox 360 HL2 retail version.

I hope that motion blur isn’t a post effect applied to the demo video, but actually done in-engine, like Project Offset. Here’s hoping for the latter case – man it really bumps up the sense of realism and immersion, especially with the portals swooshing by at high speed like that!

This is based on Narbacular Drop , a freeware game.
    Try it!

The developers later joined Valve .. so Portal = Narbacular Drop + HL2

Heres a link to a 720P trailer. You can also tell that this game has a depth of field effect in it – you can see it in effect in the fire room.

Wow this game is so amazing,
    I’m gonna leave another reply.

Portal is the type of game that makes every vein in my body want to explode.

I see stuff like this and my heart thumps in my ears.

    My hands, fingers shake.

    My pupils widen.

I leave this world and go into another, where all that matters is winning.

    Ok I’m done rambling. :]

Same as Dosou, I’m a future addict of that game and that’s been planned ever since they released the trailer…

original gameplay is what makes a game stand out … Narbacular Drop’s portal system was simply the bestest
